Links Cup: A Weekend of Friendly Rivalry at St Francis Links! |
Well, folks, if you thought the Ryder Cup was the pinnacle of golfing drama, you clearly haven’t experienced the unique blend of competitive spirit and good-natured banter that is the St Francis Links Cup! |
 |
 |
This past weekend, our beautiful course played host to a golfing showdown.
We’re talking about the much-anticipated clash between the South African Team, led by Hein Spangenberg, and the International Team, captained with flair by Yan Coesens.
The event kicked off with a flourish, setting the stage for a memorable weekend. Flags were raised, captains delivered their motivational addresses (and some friendly taunting), and national anthems filled the air, all designed to get everyone in the competitive mood.
Saturday’s play was divided into two exciting formats. The front nine featured a Betterball Stableford.
The back nine then transitioned to the challenging Foursomes format, testing teamwork and precision. And in a testament to the perfectly matched pairings orchestrated by Hein and Yan, the day concluded in a thrilling draw! Both teams finished with 11 points apiece, proving that every shot truly counted.
Sunday brought the individual pressure of Par 3 Matchplay games. This is where the South African team truly hit their stride, demonstrating some exceptional short-game prowess. They managed to secure a decisive victory on the day, winning 13 to 9. This strong performance on Sunday ultimately sealed their overall triumph. The final scores reflected their consistent play.
South Africa finished with 24 points against the Internationals 20 points. |

A huge thank you goes out to Metal Badge South Africa and Colin Higgins for their continued support of this fantastic event! The winners’ and runners-up medals were, as always, a brilliant touch, adding a well-deserved shine to the weekend’s achievements. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Links Cup, eager to see what new golfing tales will unfold! |
Get ready for the “Battle of the Babes” rematch! |
St Francis Links vs St Francis Bay Ladies |
Hold onto your golf clubs, Ladies. On 13 October, the greens of St Francis Links will once again play host to the legendary “Ladies’ Battle of the Babes,” as our formidable St Francis Links ladies take on the equally fabulous St Francis Bay ladies! Get ready for another epic showdown that promises more laughs, more camaraderie, and perhaps a few more errant shots than usual (all in good fun, of course!).
We’ve heard whispers from both sides, tales of secret practice sessions, new lucky charms, and even a few (unconfirmed) reports of early morning putting drills under the cover of darkness!
A massive shout-out and a hearty round of applause go to PW Harvey, who is generously on board this year as a sponsor! |
Muirfield at St Francis Links |
A Day of Tradition, Camaraderie, and (Hopefully) Good Golf! |
Get ready, gentlemen of St Francis Links, for an event that promises to be as steeped in tradition as a well-aged single malt and as competitive as a friendly wager on the 1st tee! We are thrilled to announce the upcoming Muirfield event, hosted right here at St Francis Links on Tuesday, October 28th.
For those unfamiliar with the hallowed traditions of Muirfield, prepare yourselves for a truly classic golfing experience. The day will unfold over 36 holes of challenging Foursomes golf. That’s right, two rounds of alternate shot, testing not only your individual skill but also your partnership’s synergy and, perhaps, your patience! Remember the golden rule – NO APOLOGIES.
This format, a cornerstone of traditional links golf.
But fear not, for even the most intense competition is punctuated by moments of refined indulgence. After the first 18 holes, we will pause for a traditional Muirfield lunch, complete with fine wine. This is where the true spirit of the event shines – a chance to relax, recount your morning’s triumphs (and tribulations), and enjoy excellent company. And yes, gentlemen, in keeping with Muirfield’s esteemed customs, suits and ties are required – unless you want the fines master to have his eyes fixated on you!
Think of it as a brief, stylish interlude before you return to the links to conquer the remaining 18 holes.
Once the final putt has dropped and the scores are tallied, we’ll gather for a relaxed prize-giving and drinks afterwards.
So, save the date and keep a keen eye on our upcoming communications. |
Get ready, St Francis Links members – they’ve decreed a rematch! |
Remember that glorious Friday when we hosted our “Good Neighbours” from Humewood?
The sun was shining, the course was pristine, and our team delivered an absolutely dominant display, securing a resounding 14-2 victory! It was a spectacle, a celebration of golf, and a testament to the incredible talent we have here at St Francis Links. We extend a huge thank you to the Humewood management team – Brendon Timm, Dylan Reid, Wiele Rademeyer, and Hugo Maritz (Humewood captain) – for their sportsmanship and for making the initial event such a success.
Now, mark your calendars for October 31st, because we’re heading to Humewood for the return fixture, and let’s just say they’ll be looking for revenge!
While we might have suggested they’d need a “Miracle at Medinah” type comeback, we know they’ll be bringing their A-game on their home turf. This is more than just a golf match; it’s a chance to renew friendly rivalries, enjoy another fantastic day on a links course, and show them that our victory wasn’t a fluke! Let’s rally our support and cheer on our St Francis Links team as they aim to continue their winning streak. Get ready for another thrilling chapter in the “Battle of Links Courses”!
