Jeff Clause, Liezl Clause, Charl Blaauw, Pieter Germishuys and Norman Riley all attended the Club Management Association of South Africa’s Annual Conference. |
Introduction to the Conference Experience |
Attending the Club Management Association of South Africa (CMASA) annual conference was an enriching experience for all types of professionals and managers in the club industry. This event served as a platform for networking, learning, and sharing best practices among club managers, owners, and industry stakeholders. The conference featured a lineup of esteemed guest speakers who brought diverse insights and expertise to the table. |
Each speaker brings unique perspectives based on their experiences in various sectors related to club management:
Brent Lindeque – Known for his work in social media and digital marketing strategies, Brent offers insights into how clubs can leverage online platforms to enhance member engagement and attract new clientele.
Brent was also our MC for the conference (his 4th year!) and always brings positive energy! He is the Founder of The Good things Guy!
Before Good Things Guy, the online Good News site was born, Brent Lindeque did something. What started as a simple idea to try and better one person’s day, turned into a global event carried out by millions of people. The ‘RAK initiative’ was all about giving back and helping those in need. |
|
It all started when Brent Lindeque, a young South African, turned the reckless drinking game Nek-nominations on its head – by using his nomination to instead perform a random act of kindness. By giving a homeless man a R20 meal, and using the power of social media to “pay-it-forward” his nomination went viral and to date has been featured locally on Carte Blanche, Espresso, 5Fm, eNCA, News24, Radio702 and internationally on Mashable, Huffington Post, CNN, BBC, Sky News, the Oprah Magazine and even Ellen Degeneres gave the initiative a shout-out.
Brent brightened up the room with an engaging personality, always highlighting the person’s ability see the positive things in people. Believing that good news is and always will be around us – we just need to see it.
David Grier – A renowned adventurer and motivational speaker, David shares lessons from his expeditions that can be applied to leadership and team dynamics within clubs.
Carel du Toit – Combines passion for people with his commitment to community with the background of extensive IT expertise. He constantly sets himself and his team goals to encourage continued improvement and innovative experiences.
David Allen – Is a leadership coach with an exciting and engaging approach to life. His descriptive and engaging way of delivering insight kept all of us on our seats. One area that we took on board was establishing basic principles that you believe in and never compromising on them.
Paul Leishman – Walking up on stage with a very colourful outfit that complemented his trip to Las Vegas – attending the CMAA world conference. He provided great insight and information on the current happenings of clubs around the globe.
His background in strategic planning allowed him to address future trends in the club industry and how managers can prepare for them.
Benoit le Roy – With expertise in finance and investment within the leisure sector, Benoit discusses financial sustainability strategies that are vital for long-term success.
He has over 40 years of experience in environmental engineering. He is the CEO of the Water Ledger SA and Operations Director of Nexus Water Alchemy. He set the scene of what water we have for the future, government policies and strategies.
Craig Corbett – A specialist in technology relating to irrigation on golfer courses, Craig highlights innovative tools that can streamline operations and enhance member experiences.
Rob Arnold – A long time CMASA partner focused on human resources and staff development, Rob emphasises the importance of cultivating a positive workplace culture to improve service delivery. We always enjoy spending time with Rob! His presentation was so engaging! RCA operates as a culture development and customer experience enabler to brands across the retail, medical and hospitality sectors.
Roger Collins – An expert in marketing strategies specific to clubs, Roger shares effective techniques for promoting events and services to maximise attendance and revenue.
Ryan Stramrood – A motivational speaker with a focus on resilience and mental toughness, took us through an amazing experience of gaining three Guiness world records for ice swimming. He inspires the attendees to overcome challenges both personally and professionally with our hidden mental fortitude and self belief – pushing past the impossible, is possible. This was a nail-biting presentation! Read more about him here. |
The conference also facilitates numerous networking opportunities where attendees can connect with peers from across South Africa’s club industry. We had the most amazing experience of playing Fancourt Links and Outeniqua, as well as prize giving dinners with new faces around the table that we can share thoughts and experiences with. |
Workshops and Breakout Sessions |
In addition to keynote speeches, participants have access to workshops and breakout sessions tailored to specific areas of interest such as membership retention strategies, event planning best practices, or financial management techniques. These sessions allow for deeper dives into topics relevant to current challenges faced by club managers today. |
Conclusion: The Value of Attending CMASA’s Annual Conference |
Overall, attending the CMASA annual conference was not just about listening to speakers – it’s about engaging with fellow professionals who share similar goals of enhancing their clubs’ operations while fostering a vibrant community spirit among members. The knowledge gained from this event equipped us with actionable insights that we can take on board and enhance your experience with us.
Our sincere thanks to the excellent CMASA team, under leadership of Roxanne Reeves, as well as the Executive Committee. You always deliver excellent service! |

The Japanese character for 10,000 resembles a person walking. A 1960s Japanese pedometer was called “Manpo-kei”, which translates to “10,000 steps meter”. Marketing at its best. But there is science behind the numbers. Walking specifically 9,800 steps each day reduces your risk of dementia by up to 50% (Nuffield Health). |
Social connection is a pillar of lifestyle medicine. There is significant evidence that feeling connected can help people improve both physical and overall health. |
Sports offer mental and physical health benefits. Golf adds social engagement. |
Make a plan now. Next week, organise with some friends to play-9 one late afternoon during the week. Make it a scramble drive. Make the game about enjoyment, connection, and relaxation. |
