We have received a mail regarding preferred lies in golf. I, for one, have never been a fan of them and feel that South Africa is one of the few places in the world where they are the norm. In my life, I was taught to play the course as I see it, play the ball as I find it and, above all, do what is fair. Golf is not about perfect. It’s about playing the game. Maybe preferred lies help the golfer in the short run, but it certainly doesn’t contribute to the speed of play. We have a well-maintained course and maybe that is an advantage. Maybe relief should be given from sand-filled divots (GUR, as I see it) and bare patches in the closely mown that are seen as temporary conditions. When I grew up, moving the ball was a penalty. If no one saw it, it was simply cheating and when cheating is involved, The GOLF GODS WILL TAKE CARE OF THE REST-like the three-footer you should have made! Anyway, here is how it has come to us. Absorb the information below and feel free to comment.
