We were flying, then…
After our best 1st quarter in the history of the Club, January and February were marching along as the rest of the world braced itself for Covid. The next three months were hell for people, for business and for The Links. When we could reopen, we expected the worst to continue. But, fortunately, we were allowed to welcome back, with observed protocols, the South African market. Health and personal time took centre stage with more golfers playing than ever before in the winter months. We started our new financial year in October with conservative budgets and limited expectations; but the golfers kept coming – even the odd conference or two.
We played the events that we couldn’t before and the Club Champs for men are coming up on the 22nd and 23rd. Saturday’s Ultimate Par-3 Champs were fully subscribed. From our booking to date, the course will be in high demand (members’ times in the morning from 6h50-9h00 will be reserved until 48hrs prior to play).
Let’s keep it all safe and joyous! Happy Holidays!
The Ultimate Par-3 Championship
Dr Lynn know how to play big courses and little courses and she led the way again with a sterling 61 gross. Helen Bridges finished second and Club Champion, Rita DuPlessis, came in 3rd, losing the count out. Elmarie Maarschalk matched her husband’s winning total from a couple years ago when she fired a superb 50 Nett! Margot McGregor was runner-up and Lesley Fisher was counted in form third.
Dr Merrick Bryans beat Rian Chalmers by one shot, shooting level par in his first Championship. The one shot can be attributed to his perfect shot on the 17th (ACE). He actually played 16-18, 2,1,2. Norman (the) Rock was steady, as usual, coming in third on +3. Dave Hart nipped Charl Blaauw and Malcolm White by a shot as he shot 52 nett with the others on 53.
The event was fully subscribed with more than 80 players in the field!

U.S. Kids Debuts at SFL
With huge thanks to Fred Van Eyssen, the Viljoen’s and St Francis Links and the Links Pro Shop, we were able to host a very successful event over the weekend. 41 kids, boys and girls from 6 to 17 competed for GREAT PRIZES, TROPHIES AND A TRIP TO THE NATIONAL FINALS at Zabula in 2021. Three of our own were all age-group winners, Izzy, Shaun and Micah. Malan Potgieter has been playing here in events since we was 7. Now at 17, he is one of the best around proving that with two fantastic rounds of 69 and 67 gross!
