The Man who made golf cool – Arnold Palmer

The King will never be forgotten…

Arnie

When I awoke on Monday morning after watching the Tour Championships til the end (wow, what a finish), Scott Tolley from Jack Nicklaus Group had sent out this mail

As most of you have already heard, the world of golf and sports lost a beloved icon tonight, with the passing of Arnold Palmer. Jack and Barbara were informed of this great loss at about 8:45 p.m., and Jack issued the below statement to the media about the passing of his dear friend. On his social media platforms, we also included the attached collage, which could have included hundreds, if not thousands of images that captured their uniquely special bond. We thought it only appropriate to share Jack’s words with you, as well.

Written by Jack Nicklaus, when he heard the news that his good friend had passed…

“I was shocked to hear that we lost a great friend—and that golf lost a great friend.
“At this point I don’t know what happened, and I suppose it is not important what happened. What is important is that we just lost one of the incredible people in the game of golf and in all of sports. My friend—many people’s friend—just wore out. I know he was in Pittsburgh trying to find out how to make himself better. That’s what Arnold has always tried to do. He has always been a fighter and he never gave up on anything. He didn’t give up even now. Maybe his body did, but I know Arnold’s will and spirit did not.
“I wish I had another chance to talk to him, but I am so glad we talked a couple weeks ago on his birthday (Sept. 10), when he sounded great. So Barbara and I are just in shock and incredibly saddened. Our hearts, thoughts, prayers and sympathies go out to Kit, his kids, grand kids, great grandchildren, and his entire loving family.
“He was one of my best friends, closest friends, and he was for a long, long time. I will miss him greatly.
“Arnold transcended the game of golf. He was more than a golfer or even a great golfer. He was an icon. He was a legend. Arnold was someone who was a pioneer in his sport. He took the game from one level to a higher level, virtually by himself. Along the way, he had millions of adoring fans—Barbara and I among them. We were great competitors, who loved competing against each other, but we were always great friends along the way. Arnold always had my back, and I had his. We were always there for each other. That never changed.
“He was the king of our sport and always will be.”

It’s interesting that while I regard Jack Nicklaus as the greatest golfer of all time, Arnold Palmer was my first golfing hero. As little kids we would imitate their swings and their mannerisms as we practiced. When Jack came into the frame and defeated “my hero” I wasn’t very impressed. It took a while to accept the lad from OHIO. My parents took me on a road trip when I was in my teens and we went to Latrobe where Arnie’s dad was on the tractor. I later met Arnie at the Legend of Golf tournament in Austin, Texas. We actually shared a “brown water” and talked for a good while. His handshake was strong and his arms were like Popeye’s! I had the chance to play Bay Hill and was made to feel at home there…because that’s just the way it was supposed to be. The man who made the game cool has passed and I will miss him, too!

Ladies come 4th!

Hi Everyone
The Final League Results have finally come out! The letter from Cathy Bezuidenhout is attached.
Please accept my congratulations and sincere thanks to every single one of you who participated this year and contributed to our excellent standing of Fourth Place in the field of 9 Clubs. That is quite an achievement considering that last year we were at the bottom! Yvette has approached us to find out if all the ladies who played in the League would like to meet for an ‘End of League Year’ casual luncheon. I think it is a very good idea and have suggested Le Chameleon in Humansdorp as it is pretty central for all of our ladies. It would be appreciated if you let me know if you can make it. We would like to try for a date early in October, say 4 or 6 October at 12:30. As soon as we have feedback and a suitable date we will finalize. Once again, many thanks for playing and for doing so well.
Kind regards
Sandy Cunningham

Dear League Captains

It is hard to believe that another successful League season has once again drawn to a close.

A BIG THANK YOU to ALL the League Captains and the enthusiastic, committed players.
It is not always easy to field a team especially when there is travelling involved-WELL DONE!

The sportmanship and competitiveness that prevails between the players, is great to see.
THANK YOU to ALL for the great spirit in which the games were played- the EPWG League could not
continue without your participation.

We are privileged to have been hosted at four great courses in our region this year, namely:
Humewood, Port Elizabeth Golf Club, Uitenhage Golf and Wedgewood Golf Clubs.
A VERY BIG THANK YOU to these courses for their continued support of Ladies Golf!
We REALLY appreciate the fact that special arrangements are made to accommodate our League on
Mondays, as most Clubs are either closed or on skeleton staff on Mondays.

Thank you to EPWG for subsidizing the delicious snacks enjoyed at the Final prize-giving and
the Vice-President (Michelle Nieuwoudt) for presenting the shields.
