DVG, Rotary and the United Church volunteers (with your donations) – making a difference
This marks the end of the 3rd week of lockdown and the wear and tear is showing on everyone’s faces. The financial stress and isolation are as damaging as the pandemic. Yet, in St Francis, the efforts are there to help those in great pain. I am proud to say that members of the Links team are part of DVG (Disaster Volunteer Group) and they, combined with those from Rotary and the St Francis United Church, are working together to deliver food parcels in the local community. These videos and posts show the success of the programme as to date, more than 1100 family parcels have been delivered with the funds received. Another 500 are being packed today for delivery tomorrow.
THOSE BEHIND THE SCENES
We know that our volunteers do so because it’s their calling and they are servants of a needy community. None of them expects individual thanks as this is just what they do.
Others who don’t expect acknowledgement or thanks (although we think they deserve it), are:
SUPERSPAR Village Square – for facilitating delivery and providing excellent pricing for food parcel content
Smhart Security – for accompanying the distribution team each day and ensuring safety and order.
Balobi Fish Market – who have provided fish with each parcel we deliver
Woodlands Dairy – who have provided milk with each parcel we deliver
ST FRANCIS UNITED CHURCH – for prayers and support and masks and funding through donations
Rotary St Francis – for packing (hard work) and funding through donations
Lesley Davies and John – who provided 300 homes with fresh lettuce during our last distribution
South African Police Service – for your support and accompaniment (incl station commander, Captain Gomoshe)
And then there are corporate and individual monetary donors who are as important because, without you, we cannot help Sea Vista. Thank you, everyone!
A DONATION OF R200 WILL BUY ONE FOOD PARCEL AND 100% OF ALL DONATIONS WILL GO TO THE COVID-19 CAUSE.
In an online stakeholder meeting today, the DVG, together with Rotary, the St Francis United Church, and Samaritans and key individuals confirmed its plans to commence with an intense food donation drive. The plan, in cooperation with our VillageSquare SuperSpar, is that all food parcels are funnelled through one responsibly managed operation thus avoiding duplication.
One delivery of 250 food parcels costs R50 000. Each parcel contains sustenance ingredients such as maize meal, sugar, eggs, rice, soup packs, flour, milk, oil. They will be assembled by authorised volunteers and, in an effort including SAPS and security companies, be distributed to the Sea Vista elderly, single women and children with no income and the most desperate. These people are being identified by community leaders on the ground. As you can imagine, this is a large-scale operation and we believe we will need at least 1 000 food parcels over the next couple weeks, depending on how long the lockdown continues for.
Can your company assist with a R50 000 donation (we are a registered NPO for accounting purposes) which will provide 250 food parcels? Or can you spare R1000 for 5 parcels or even just R200 which will provide 1 parcel? If so, we ask that please donate to:

We thank you in advance and will report back each step of the way.
This pandemic has also provided the opportunity to bond with friends and family – albeit through WhatsApp, Facetime and the old fashioned phone.
In this day and age, many of our family members are far from us. In my case, my brother and sister are in IOWA and Wisconsin. He sent this pic to say he was thinking of us –
My kids are in Texas and my American friends are located from Nevada to Virginia and points in between. We are talking now more than ever. My friends in South Africa from Knysna and George to Johannesburg and Pretoria, are now closer. When we are marching along, doing our best at work, family often comes second. This lockdown has made me appreciate so many people in my life, starting with Liezl. While we have never taken each other for granted, the “chores” we share at home, the conversations about life and family, just the TIME together, has been a blessing, in disguise. At the same time, too much time together can be stressful! I recommend a good book!
On a real touching note, this past Easter Sunday, my niece and God-daughter, Milana, conducted her own service in the living room of their home – priceless moment.
