Pairing wines…perfectly!

Great food and great wines make for a great evening

Chef Jon was on the mark again as he presented five magic courses to pair with five magic wines! Andrew Gunn, the owner of IONA wines, and his wife were on hand to explain the history of the estate and a bit about the wines. IONA was a popular spot at the last Food and Wine Festival here in December. It was another full house (with some full tummy’s, too!)

As some of you would know, I occasionally put the clubs back in the cupboard and take out the apron to prepare myself for another sizzling hot session with Chef Jon in the kitchen.

We’ve hosted some amazing food & wine pairings in the past couple of months, and I was fortunate enough to work alongside the greats like Chef Jon and sous chef Helga. This experience taught me the ins and outs of preparing a five-star meal. Wow, what an experience; I’ve helped cook and plate dishes that were beyond my wildest expectations. I’ve experienced all the preparation going into each meal and every effort which was made to create this absolute breathtaking and mouthwatering masterpiece.

Chef Jon and his team are an absolute pleasure to work with, each one giving me advice on what to do and what to look out for, truly embracing me as one of their own regular chefs.

I can’t wait for the next Food & Wine pairing to see what the kitchen has in store.

Big thanks to Chef Jon, Chef Helga and the team for growing my passion for food.

Our first Muirfield Day (ladies, you’re next)

M

In honour of the traditional member’s day at The Honorary Company of Edinburgh Golfers (Muirfield), we held our first Muirfield day. Starting early on Saturday, the Secretary of our Honorary Society of Links Members, TK, paired the entrants into foursomes with foursomes as the format for morning play. Following the golf we dressed for lunch (jacket and tie) and met in Jack’s Bar for the customary pint, dram or drop of gin. Once together, we all moved through to the Lighthouse restaurant for a three-course Scottish tribute that featured a salmon-based starter, followed by fillet of venison and a dessert that cannot be described in a way that shares the flavours on the plate. A little wine was consumed to accompany the starters and mains – the Muirfield way. Following the lunch, we dressed for golf again and resumed play with new pairings and foursomes again. Everyone was a winner as we shared stories above the 18th green following play!
