Let’s hear it for the Ladies! LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!
I ran into Helen Bridges and she was beaming about her victory in League play the day before. She should have been because she was part of the team who defeated PEGC and at Wedgewood. Dr Lynn Slogrove was still “on a HOT” after winning the Humewood Club Championships – Strokeplay and Matchplay the week before. She knocked off our former Club Champion and fellow EPLGA representative, Janine VD Merwe in the Singles play. 5 of the 6 ladies won their matches leading to a 10-2 victory over Jeffrey’s Bay.
The St Francis Links ladies golf league team, under the captaincy of Lynn Slogrove, won the 2022 EPLGA league for the first time ever. Their team of 10 players performed admirably throughout the year. They won the league on 41 points, with Walmer GC in second place on 39 points, and Humewood in third place on 38 points. Overall, the SF Links team halved their match against Walmer GC (6-6), and won their matches against Humewood (7-5), PEGC (10-2), and Jeffreys Bay (8-4) and St Francis Bay (10-2). What a fantastic achievement!!
This week, the Links was represented by Bimpie Olivier, Lynda Mynhardt, Helen Bridges, Lynn Slogrove, Gill Hammond and Debs McCracken. Other team members: Sally Nienaber, Elmarie Maarschalk, Rose Gunton & Linda Clarke contributed over the year!
Alison is FLYING!
She takes the low net on Friday in Re/Max Royale and teams up for the Ladies’ Invitational on Saturday. Alison Bosch was in a slump, both in golf and tennis. Then she got a pep talk and was off! On Friday she set a record going 6 under par net in the par-3 competition. On Saturday, she and her partner, Noeline De Ridder added their names to the Champion’s Board winning the 2022 Bard’au Ladies’ Invitational with 40 points! They edged out Margot McGregor and Melissa Palmer on 39 and Debbie McCracken and Chamel Malgas on 37. Special thanks to Anne Coesens for her continued support!

Last week, Stuart McLean returned to St Francis Links for a visit and a game of golf. I received a nice letter from him today and decided to share part of it and his latest review (published on his SATop100 website).
Hi Jeff and Thinus,
Thoroughly enjoyed my week of R&R in St Francis, and thank you both for making it that extra special for me at the Links, as you always so kindly do. I would describe Friday’s round with Thinus, Charl and Richard as one of the most enjoyable I have experienced in the 15-plus years I have been going there. Playing the Links that day compares with anything I’ve experienced overseas.
There’s a magical ambience at St Francis Links that has been created by the golf course, the clubhouse, and you and your team Jeff.
I expressed some of those thoughts in my review on the Top 100 Courses website. St Francis Links – SA Top 100 Courses
I well remember St Francis Links when it opened more than 15 years ago. Then, most golfers viewed playing there with trepidation. Tee times were easily obtainable. Since then this course and estate have experienced a 360-degree turnaround. It is now one of the most desirable local destinations, thanks to brilliant marketing and the gradual realisation among golfers that this is an extremely good value world-class venue in a beautiful environment. The Links was busy when I played on a Friday, firstly with a group of 56 from Richard Gill’s Corporate Cup (who used to never venture outside the Garden Route), then with homeowners for the weekly sundowner shotgun. Everyone wants to live on this estate because of its idyllic lifestyle. Houses are multiplying. Even the shortcut path for walkers like myself through the bush from first green to the second tee has been lost to property development. However, the houses don’t impact the golfing experience. Set well back from the playing corridors, the architectural theme blends into the attractive general aesthetics. It is an estate where development and environment have found harmony together.
