Local Talent Shines at the EP Amateur Championship
The EP Amateur Championship has showcased remarkable local talent, with member Chris van Rensburg delivering an outstanding performance in the strokeplay section. His score of 71 not only highlights his skill but also sets a competitive tone for the rest of the tournament. The strokeplay format tests golfers over a set number of holes, and van Rensburg’s ability to navigate this challenge successfully speaks volumes about his capabilities on the course.

As we transition into the Matchplay section of the event, anticipation builds around who will be crowned the EP Amateur Champion. Shaun Viljoen has already made his mark by winning his first fixture against Raynard Venter with a score of 2 and 1. This format pits players directly against each other, where each hole is a separate contest, making it a thrilling experience for both players and spectators alike.

Upcoming Fixture: Shaun Viljoen vs. Chris van Rensburg this Saturday!
This week, all eyes will be on young protege Shaun Viljoen, recognised as one of South Africa’s top junior golfers. He faces off against Chris van Rensburg, known for his consistent performances in EP events. This matchup promises to be exciting as both players bring their unique strengths to the table: Viljoen’s youth and potential contrast with van Rensburg’s experience and proven track record in amateur golf.

We encourage our members to come out and support this great event. Witnessing local talents compete against some of the best amateurs in the region!

Ladies Clinic Starts off a Great Year for the Ladies
We have seen a massive amount of growth in the ladies section of the club – a big thanks to our previous captain, Sally Nienaber, and current captain, Sue Cogswell, who have been great in rallying the troops and encouraging ladies to take up the game.

At our first clinic, we were thrilled to see 14 ladies participating! This turnout is indicative of the growing interest and enthusiasm among women in our club.

The focus of this clinic was centred on dynamic balance and understanding how the body rotates during the golf swing. By grasping these concepts, participants can enhance their accuracy and power in their swings. Dynamic balance is crucial as it allows golfers to maintain stability throughout their swing motion, which directly impacts performance on the course.

We encourage all ladies to keep an eye on the ladies’ golf bookings group for updates on when our next session will be.

These sessions don’t only offer a great opportunity to improve your golf game, but also to make some friends along the way!

Exciting Times for Golf at St Francis Links
We are pleased to announce that the tee sheets are filling up for the coming months, indicating a vibrant and engaging atmosphere at St Francis Links, which holds a lot of promise during this time of disruption whilst the upstairs section is undergoing upgrades. As we look forward, we would like to outline our long-term goals and initiatives aimed at enhancing the golfing experience for both members and visitors.
Optimising Outside Play
One of our primary objectives is to optimise outside play on non-member days such as Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons. We will introduce Open Days where non-members can experience our course at favourable rates. This initiative aims to attract new players and showcase the quality of our facilities.
Fun Interactive Days
In addition to optimising play, we aim to create memorable experiences through fun interactive events:

1. Valentine’s Day Competition: See information below.

2. Shootouts with Prizes: Exciting shootout events will be held, featuring great prizes that incentivise participation and add an element of competition.

3. St. Patrick’s Day Fun Format (15 March): A special event with a mystery alliance format will be organised on St. Patrick’s Day, complemented by food and beverage offerings that enhance the overall experience.

Promoting Inter-Club Relationships
We recognise the importance of fostering relationships with surrounding clubs:

1. Collaboration with Other Clubs: We actively promote opportunities for members from other clubs to play at St Francis Links, encouraging camaraderie among local golf communities.

2. Member Engagement: Our outreach efforts will include inviting our members to engage with players from neighbouring clubs, creating memorable experiences that strengthen inter-club relationships.

Love is in the Air – Valentine’s Day Competition
The Valentine’s Day competition is scheduled for 14 February – Shotgun start at 14h00.

Competition Format:
The competition will feature two divisions:

  • Golfer/Golfer Division
  • Golfer/Non-Golfer Division

In the Golfer/Non-Golfer division, the format is designed to be inclusive and fun, allowing one golfer to play until they reach the green while their partner, who is a non-golfer, will putt out. This unique approach encourages participation from those who may not typically engage in golfing activities.

Course Details:
The event will take place on a beautiful par-3 course over nine holes.
After the golf competition, participants are invited to enjoy light snacks provided for all attendees. This social aspect enhances the community feel of the event.

Dinner Reservations:
Following the snacks, Chef Pieter will host a special Valentine’s Dinner at the Halfway Deli. It is important to note that bookings are essential for both the golf competition and dinner.

Entry into this Valentine’s Day Golf competition is free for all members.

REMOVE 3-Putts
Golf is NOT a search for perfection. It is a game of misses. Perfection is not a realistic goal. It sets you up for frustration.
Making your misses smaller is a realistic goal. It also leads to lower scores and much less frustration.

We remember the putts we sank unexpectedly. They provide exhilaration. But, 3-putts damage scorecards and deliver frustration.

When we 3-putt, the focus of our frustration is usually the missed second putt. However, it was usually the size of the first miss that led to the 3-putt.

Add a simple statistic to your scorecard on each round. What was the length of your largest first putt miss on the greens? Bring that focus to your next round, and we’re betting you’ll already improve.
MEMORABLE rounds
Now work on reducing that number and watch the 3-putts disappear. Set a target to have a round with no 3-putts. Make it a moment of celebration.

Our Purpose
To get you within 2 metres
Can we reduce the number of shots it takes you, over a round, to get within 2 metres of the hole from the moment you’re inside 70 metres?
That purpose starts with us improving your short-game technique across a range of different shot types. Especially the short and mid-distance pitch shot and the greenside chip shot.

Practice helps. So does the right wedge setup. Clean and effective grooves help with control. Soles and grinds that fit your swing (steep to shallow) and the way you like to play these shots (open and closed faces), makes it easier to hit crisper, cleaner, more consistent shots.

The all-new Cleveland Golf RTZ Wedges have different leading edges matched to different sole types. A design feature aimed at improving your contact consistency.

A new steel alloy has removed all restrictions on the wedge designers. Now everything is possible.
