From accolades to raising the bar even more!
When you set the bar high, there are only two ways to go – up or down. I only know up. Every year, we want our golfers and guests to see something different and better. With the presentation of the course for the PGA Championship, Charlie pushed the bar sky-high with his cutting pattern and overall playability of the course. Our champion and the highest-ranked player in the field, Dean Burmester, established a 4-round course record of 267, 17-under par. How did that make me feel – GREAT. People love watching great golf and I think, in our case, watching great players perform in great conditions. Hey, this Big Man provided fantastic weather with only Friday afternoon moving to “perky” status.
Charl, I don’t think the members want to hear you coming at 4 am to get the job done. Just keep up the good work. Thanks
The Club is also picking up a great deal of business and we are now in a position where we’ll need to say NO to additional events or pay the price of overworking the team and compromising quality. Recently, we hosted an event for the Senior Amateur Golfers and all did not go well. Why do I mention it? Because like the old Heads and Shoulders (dandruff shampoo) classic commercial states, you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. So, with the post-covid increases in business, we are re-aligning the ship and committed to reaching our high standards. We don’t represent a restaurant you don’t return to, we are different. We are YOUR Club. Watch this space.
Two Great Weddings
On a weekend where we played over 300 rounds of golf (one day’s golf at Stellenbosch, SA’s busiest Club), we also hosted two amazing weddings with gorgeous brides, happy parents and guests leaving with great memories – maybe some with limited memories!
The Victoria Parker/Russel Norman Wedding on Saturday
Pieter Zietsman romps to the EP Champs
Pieter Zietsman has been in this position before winning the EP Champs in the past. This year, in the final, he smashed runner-up, Dillon Germshauy, 10 and 8 in the 36-hole final! That’s proper golf. Our own Nic V Rensburg knocked out father and son, Johnny and Jondré Ludick in the semi-finals of the Plate on Saturday so that he could meet his commitment and play with me at Knysna in the Pro-am on Sunday (questionable decision!). Meekah De Sousa won the Plate uncontested.
…in case you missed it!
Our chairman, Chris Kelway, travelled to Dubai, on behalf of the Estate to receive our award as Best Golf Course in South Africa at the World Golf Awards. We were nominated with 20 other clubs and came home with the big prize. This award caps a great two years of amazing accolades ranging from the John Collier Awards for good governance and Environmental compliance to moving up in the rankings, achieving top PGA recognition and securing a tournament that deserves MAJOR status again. It all comes down to commitment, consistency and teamwork!
