The Legends love St Francis Bay
Jeff is away this week as he went up north to celebrate his birthday and host the BMW Championship at Blair Atholl. He is the Tournament Director and all the players are in good hands with him officiating and providing entertainment. Happy Birthday, Jeff. This gives me, TK a chance to write to all our loyal readers.
We had a superb weekend here at the links. During the week the Sunshine Senior Tour had an event at Humewood and the Pro’s were keen to visit St Francis Links. In a matter of days, we organized and hosted The Legends Pro-Am. Andre Cruse was the driving force behind the idea and our members jumped at the opportunity to play with the professionals.
The field was full after two days of advertising, we even had to bring in the likes of Wallie Coetsee (70 Gross) and Michiel Bothma, still a couple of years away from the big five O as we had too many members that wanted to play.
We started the event with a Friday afternoon 9 hole Par 3 competition followed by a welcome function with snacks and a blind draw for four balls. All the professionals and their families stayed at Cape St Francis Resort free of charge, thank you Anita and Dane for the sponsorship, without you this would have been hard to pull off.
The weather for the weekend was fantastic and we started tee times at 7h30 Saturday with the last tee time at 9h20. The pro’s enjoyed the test of the links and our members enjoyed watching and learning from the professionals. Morne Geldenhuys from Vodacom put up a prize for the leading amateur in the field, a spot in the Vodacom Origins of Golf Pro-Am at Humewood and the best in the field was none other than Scott Keevy, with his small controlled draw managing 39 individual points. Nice one.
Other notables in the field were Chris Williams, fresh of a win during the week at Humewood, Neville Clarke who runs the Senior Tour, Chris Davison, Ben Fouchee, Nic Henning, Grant Muller, Mike Quinn, Michael Scholz, thanks for the trick shots Pards. Rounding off the Legends were Doug Mc Guigan, shooting the low round of the day and James Kingston.

We received so many compliments about the course, the staff and the members that I am sure this was the beginning of something that will only grow and get better. Here is what a couple of them had to say.
James Kingston:” Dankie vir al julle hulp en gasvryheid! Baie beindruk met die baan, die opset en vriendelikheid and hoe dinge werk.”
Wallie Coetsee:” Dankie vir n lekker twee dae dis altyd lekker daar by julle.”
Chris Davison:” Thanks for a fun couple of days. Best.”
Neville Clarke: ” Dear Thinus and Jeff, this is to thank you on behalf of the Senior Tour players who participated in the Pro-Am. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and our amateur partners were terrific. Your golf course and the facilities are world-class and I can only spread the word.”
Grant Muller:” Thanks so much for hosting us this weekend, I hope this event will grow from strength to strength. Please extend our sincerest thanks to Cape St Francis Resort for hosting us.”
Mike Quinn:” We had such a wonderful experience at St Francis Bay and I would like to thank two people in particular; Jeff Clause and Dane from Cape St Francis Resort. I would definitely recommend that you go and play at the links, it is a great course and the staff are just fantastic! The accommodation is also a must, especially the Beach Villas, if you enjoy a view of the beach. Excellent facilities and great service, 5 stars all round.”
Thank you to our members and sponsors for making this possible.

I have been working at St Francis Links for 1 year and 8 months now as the Second Assistant Greenkeeper. I do the course set-up’s every morning. I enjoy making new tee boxes and levelling the old tee boxes and adding new sods.
I am originally from George and played often at George Golf Club. After school I studied Greenkeeping at the African Turf Academy in Pretoria at Silver Lakes Golf Estate. My mother lives in George and I have an older brother that lives in Cape Town. My favourite hobby is fishing. Whenever I get the opportunity to fish I am there. I mostly catch and release big sharks.
My motto in life is to never give up and always have a smile on my face no matter how tough things get. Always work for your goals and you will be successful.
Thank you all for caring about your course – #leading the way
