Ladies shine at the Pam Golding Ladies Open!
Following a dismal day of weather on Friday, the skies cleared just in time for the highly anticipated Pam Golding Ladies Golf Open. The event was blessed with stunning weather, setting the perfect scene for a Saturday filled with fun, competition, and camaraderie.
The day kicked off with our first-ever “Beat Saria” Chipping Competition, staged high above the 18th hole. The challenge was to out-chip our very own Pam Golding Links Specialist, Saria Blaauw. The informal yet exciting contest sparked laughter and friendly rivalry, planting the seeds for an even more thrilling competition next year. Participants were already buzzing with ideas to make it bigger and better!

With a shotgun start at 11am, the ladies eagerly took to the course after a briefing by Jeff Clause, the CEO of St Francis Links. Each team was ready to showcase their skills and enjoy a day of golf. The Pam Golding team, comprised of Saria Blaauw and Dean Fox, roved the greens in their golf cart, offering support and capturing memorable moments of the event.

As the day wound down, the festivities continued into the night with a dazzling masked dinner. The elegant affair saw attendees donning beautiful masks, dancing, and revelling in the joyous atmosphere.

Sunday also started with great weather, however, the wind did pick up during the morning, making conditions more challenging. After a lovely second day of golf, the ladies enjoyed a delightful lunch at the St. Francis Bay Golf Club, followed by the prizegiving ceremony, where Saria gave a short talk and handed out the prizes.

Well done to overall winners Sanet Pieterse and Esther Goosen!

Many thanks to all involved in this spectacular event, especially Norman Riley and his teamJustin Roux and his team, and the ladies’ captains of the two courses, Sue Cogswell and Noelle Pearson.

The Pam Golding Ladies Golf Open proved to be a resounding success, thanks to the enthusiastic participation and spirited efforts of all involved. We look forward to an even more spectacular event next year, promising bigger challenges and unforgettable memories. Stay tuned for updates and start preparing for the next round of fun and competition!

Hairy Caterpillars
by Caryl Logie
Everywhere you look, more and more and more. This is the time of year for these caterpillars, Bombycomorpha bifascia, to give the Taaibos, Searsia species, in the St Francis area and on the Links a natural pruning.

After hatching from their eggs they start eating, eating and eating, but only the Taaibos in this area. They don’t move onto other plants in your garden thank goodness. After about 2 months and having moulted 4 times they’re fully grown. They then head to the ground to find a good spot to pupate. Once on the ground they chew a few bits of earth. On a quiet day if you’re close to one you’ll hear it munching. I have!

The cocoons are dark brown and the pupae inside them gradually turn into moths. When the moths appear, they lay their eggs and the next cycle is ready to start.

These Caterpillars, although so hairy, do provide a tasty meal for some Cuckoos!

Bok Saturdays!
With all of the exciting rugby coming up over the next few months, we invite you to join us at the Club to watch with gees! The match on 10 August against Australia is at 06h45 and Pieter will also have great brekkie offerings that day! We will host a 09h30 shotgun for that Saturday only.

 Important Reminder
A reminder that we will close the course from Monday 12 August to Monday 26 August for the annual hollowtining. The clubhouse will remain open daily from 07h30 to 16h30.  Thank you!

St Francis Links has “GEES”!
From our Maestros in the Kitchen
It is all about supporting the BOKKE and showing why we as a nation stands together in UNITY for the boys in Green & Gold!  We all look for that QUICK snack to prepare prior to a game…and we have just the answer for you!

So for this week’s recipe, the Hospitality Team have created some little dynamite pockets that will be a true hit at the next game!

CREAM CHEESE, BILTONG AND SPRING ONION STUFFED PEPPADEWS

What do you need?
Smooth Cream Cheese
Biltong Dusting
Spring Onions or Chives, Finely Sliced
Whole Peppadews – We think the Mild one is the better option
– Peppadew is a brand of sweet piquanté pepper and originates from South Africa

And of course, you will also need a beer, brandy, gin or a  glass of wine to get you in the mood!

How to prepare it?

  1. In a small bowl, combine the Cream Cheese, Biltong and Spring Onion.
  2. Spoon the mixture inside the Peppadew using a spoon…alternatively do use a piping bag with a Nozzle (if you want to be fancier)
  3. Take a sip of your beverage (alcoholic or not) and continue with the recipe.
  4. Place the stuffed Peppadews on a plate or piece of Wrinkled greaseproof paper and garnish with some fresh herbs or Thinly sliced Beef Biltong.
  5. Go relax, sample a Peppadew, and while you enjoy the little bit of taste explosion take some time to browse our social media and website and see what we have to offer!

This recipe is as easy as “crouch, touch, pause and engage”!

Join us for a brilliant production from St Francis local!
Jeff Brooker grew up in St Francis Bay where his parents, Bruce and Gail are well known locals. We are super proud to host his production on 6 August 2024.
In “Every Brilliant Thing” by Duncan Macmillan, with Jonny Donahoe, a young boy grapples with the emotional challenges of his mother’s struggle with depression. To help her find hope, he begins compiling a list of everything brilliant in the world. Starting with simple pleasures like ice cream, water fights, and staying up past bedtime to watch TV, to quirky items like old people holding hands. As he matures, so does the list, transforming into a touching testament to the power of positivity in adversity.

This one-man show is brought to life by the excitingly versatile Miguel de Sampaio and unfolds in a democratic, immersive “in-the-round” setting. Audience members are invited to participate in the recitation of items on the list, creating a shared and deeply wholesome experience.

“Every Brilliant Thing” is a testament to the enduring human spirit and the remarkable ability to find joy and hope in unexpected places. Join us for an unforgettable theatrical experience that will leave you inspired, uplifted and maybe, just maybe…a little teary.

A heart-wrenching, hilarious play… One of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression—and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see, full stop.” – The Guardian

Filled to the brim with joy…beautiful, heart-wrenching and very funny.” – Time Out London

If golf is “game of misses” and good game management means minimising the impact of your misses, then we need to start with an understanding of our game. Most of you, with your mid and shorter irons, will have a slightly tilted ‘shot dispersion pattern’.
Most golfers have a dispersion pattern that is ‘wider’ in distance than the distance ‘front-to-back’.

Think about your game. Consider your dispersion pattern with an 8-iron, especially front-to-back. If golf is a “game of misses”, how relevant is the flag to your decision-making? Learn more.

Do you play for perfection and put up with the frustrations and scars on the scorecard that come from the reality of your performance?

Or do you play to make sure you get both maximum enjoyment and a lower score?
How much enjoyment can we add?
Why not challenge us? Come and book a playing lesson and we’ll provide swing advice and technique improvement. But we’ll also provide you with insights that will reduce your frustrations with the game and allow you to shoot lower scores.

The transfer of power
Even when you miss
Golf is the search for perfection but a game of misses”. Your game management needs to minimise the impact of your misses to avoid frustration and increase the magic moments you experience. So should your equipment minimise the impact of your misses.

Who hits the driver face perfectly every time? The Srixon ZX MkII Drivers don’t just create exceptional ball speed, they extend that performance across the face.

A hyper-fast face is great. But it needs to accommodate as much as possible contact that misses the sweet spot left or right and high or low.
The Srixon ZX Mk II Drivers incorporate a variable face thickness pattern on the rear of the face. These hidden ridges enhance the COR across the face. That influences how the face flexes and transfers energy to the ball on off-centre hits.
Maximum POWER
The transfer of power at impact, converting your swing speed to more ball speed, takes you further off the tee. Now add a session where we ensure the launch conditions maximise the distance that extra ball speed gives you, and we could be looking at an extra 15, 20, 25 and more metres.
