We may not have caddies here, our service is provided by all of our staff
When I started as the PGA Director of Golf at Fancourt, the Friday caddie training was a ritual. Even in the early days we supported hundreds of families by offering trained caddies and ball spotters to improve the experience on the course. Why was this so important – because a bad caddy can ruin the experience and a great caddy will enhance it. Look at the men and women on tour, the caddy is part of their equipment. This weekend, in America, Jordan Spieth’s dad is on the bag because his longtime support, Michael Greller, is at home grieving the loss of his mother. Jordan’s dad messed up on Thursday-
“I’m stepping into the ball and he goes, ‘Just don’t overdo it,’” Jordan said afterward. “I step back, step back in. I’m like, ‘Dad, there’s only really like one or two things you just can’t do and that’s just don’t say not to hit it somewhere while I’m stepping into the shot.’
“He goes, ‘Well, you know, you did it on No. 11, so I didn’t want you to do it on 13.’ I’m like, ‘I didn’t overdo it.’

At Fancourt, our caddies, for the most part, left even better memories than the course provided, learning your game quickly, offering putting advice and club selection. Many of the caddies there had a wonderful sense of humour, as well. I started hosting the caddies from Fancourt and Plett (in different tours) years ago. Why, you ask. One, because they love and appreciate the game that supports them and their families. They have also been given the opportunity to play it. Some of them pay it very well. But, when you spend 4-5 hours with the guest or member, you also have time to ask, “Have you been to St Francis Links?” It’s a great course and you should go. Our old boss and friend, Jeff, will look after you!” Guess what? It’s works like a bomb and those who come here make a point of finding me and sharing the stories.

The Ladies’ International Invitational
When Nina Cloete arrived on the first tee, it was like a homecoming as she spends most of her time in Gaborone, Botswana. She and I share a great mutual friend there and they see each other often. By crossing the border, she made our event officially International!
