The Men’s Invitational was Proper!

 

The weather in November can be dicey when Mother Nature exhales! And as I sit here early on Monday morning, she’s blessing us with a gentle rain. But not this past weekend. With temperatures in the mid-20’s and only a light puff over the last holes on Sunday, it was nearly perfect for all in attendance. The August rains brought on spectacular spring colours and they were still in bloom throughout the course and the Estate. Charl had the course in it’s “usual” outstanding condition and TK set up a fair test for the players.

Over the years the event has grown to nearly 100 golfers and for the last couple of years, we have moved to a shotgun start to get everyone off and back in at the same time. The Saturday PM start saw the bar and deck filled with golfers for a good time to come after the game. Old friends reunited and new friendship were born. The spirit (gees) was great. So were the scores.

Day One saw most golfers play from their normal tees of choice, playing a Betterball with 90% of their individual handicaps. Scoring was brilliant with four teams leading the way on 45pts. Sunday offered the option of changing tees if a strategic plan called for it and some teams moved up, sacrificing shots and a couple move back to the Championship tees hoping to benefit from gaining shots. In the end, it all came down to two points in the overall with ever-supportive member, Chris Lessing and his partner, Neels Claasen, from Zwartenbosch, winning on 88pts.

Mr Nicklaus said it would evolve

Two major things have happened over the 14 years. 1) We have made the golf course more playable with increased landing areas and much softer bunker surrounds. 2) The Bush, Blombos, Bitou and Slangbos have come on strong, Maybe too strong, everywhere. Recently Stuart McLean was here for a visit and loved how the bunkers and the course have evolved. He is doing a feature soon on St Francis Links and our talked-about natural bunkers. Yes, we have added nearly 200 hundred homes to some of the biggest golfing corridors an estate can provide. Thanks, Jack!
