2021 PGA National Winners
Last year I was honoured to win the National PGA Professional and Manager of the Year. This year, the National winners by category are worth telling you about. They have made such a great impact at their Clubs and Facilities. This year the Southern and Eastern Cape Professionals are represented nationally by Peter Berman from Scratch golf in Knysna. Peter has played an integral role on the Committee and with our area professionals. Christo Krugel was nominated for PGA Professional regionally, following TK who won the award twice.
Our regional award winners were Cliffie Barnard, Coaching (coached multiple European and PGA tour winners, Garrick Higgo), Roeloff Roelofse, Grow Golf, Ashley Weir, Club Professional, Peter, Entrepreneur and Humewood’s, Brendon Timm, PGA Management.
National winners will now compete for PGA Professional of the Year!
Dad’s Love and partnership help to create a real wine winner
Dunstan and Patricia Hogan, property owners on the estate, are the proud parents of a proper South African winemaker, Jocelyn. Hogan wines produced their first brilliant wines in 2014 and her story tells it all. My friend, Dan Nicholl (Dan loves Wine) recently interviewed Jocelyn and the show covers her history, those who influenced her and finally, the family partnership that led to today’s place as a top South African vineyard. Some of you already know the wines and others should. Take the time to watch this to the end!
Please, please, please do your part!

Highlights of the Week
New homeowner, Ferdi Coetzer, made his first Eagle 2 on the 10th hole! He was using new irons for the first time, as well. Hmmmm!
Dawn Patrol got a little noisy on the 14th when Scott Keevy hit the perfect fade (yes, fade) into the back right pin. He was still buying drinks on Saturday! Charlie Gilmour always enters the hole-in-one challenge and hasn’t been successful to date – no one has! So this past Saturday, he gave it a miss, but the shot that followed didn’t! His first hole-in-one!
Junior News
Juniors are exploring through Golf. Christo writes-
This past week our juniors were crowned as champions in 2 provinces. Shaun Viljoen (U/13) and Micah van Eyssen (U/10) are blazing a trail in their own right by improving from week to week. As they are both multiple champions, we ought to take stock of their thoughts and preferences as they keep mystifying the “grown-ups” back home.
Since Shaun broke par for the first time on home soil, he has started to talk and think differently about his game. This past weekend he played in an EP Junior event hosted by Port Elizabeth Golf Club. Shaun excelled in the event, posting a -1 (71), beating the next competitor by ten shots. When asked what the most challenging part of the day was, Shaun explained in great detail how he almost lost a shot, when, on the 15th (par 5) his ball was stopped by a mole’s hill, affecting where it came to rest. He was faced with a 30-foot putt to save par and stay two under. He kept his cool and proceeded to sink the putt. Shaun said: “I feel most confident when I am between 90 and 125 meters from the hole. When I follow through on the club I choose, I know that I can get it close to the hole.”
Micah has a beautiful, kind character. But don’t let your guard down on the golf course, for he is a force to be reckoned with. Playing in a USA Kids tournament hosted by Pinnacle Point, he beat his age group. He enjoyed the experience of playing a different course because of the beautiful views. They even saw a whale while playing. Micah says that his favourite part of travelling is to see wildlife.
Shaun and Micah are preparing to compete in the SA Junior Open hosted by San Lameer Estate, late August. They have their eyes set on improvement and enjoy the challenge that golf provides.
Team Member of the Week – Micealin Ferreira
I’ve been working at the Links for almost 3 months now, so I’m the newbie here. I’m the bar lady in Jack’s Bar and help the waitresses serve tables and keep our guests happy. Wednesday nights are my favourite! That’s when our members come in for prize giving after golf. Keeping everyone’s glasses full and interacting with the members, experiencing their happiness (or sadness!) after a game of golf, is fun and interesting.
Food and Beverage have always been my thing, getting to know people and keeping them smiling makes me happy. Believe me when I say it’s not always easy. But to see them leaving with smiles on their faces makes my day.
I am mom to the most amazing little human being, my boy and I think all parents feel like that. I live with my mother and my sister with her husband and children. We are 10 people in total in our home. I must say although there are many up and downs as with any family, we strive to be happy no matter the circumstances.
I believe that you grow as you go!!!!
A great Staff member – since day 1
Jongilizwe Gqabantshi, affectionately known as “Madala” was one of our longstanding employees who has been here since the start. He worked under Golf Data and then moved over to work for St Francis Links. Born in 1959, and has worked most of his life, Madala decided to go and rest and enjoy life without having to get out of bed at 04:00 am to go to work.
Madala never said much, he was very quiet, but when he spoke everyone listened. He was an operator on the rough machines and often mowed surrounds as well, he never blinked when a big task came his way and to top it all off, he never missed a day from work. Here is to you Madala, have an awesome time.
