Links Cup – SA romps in the Singles!

Charl Blaauw captained the South African side in the annual Links Cup and Scotsman, Thomas Grimsley, led the Internationals. After Day 1 and the playing of the Betterball and Foursomes, the sides were all square on 11 pts each. The Internationals must have dined together on Saturday night and got food poisoning! As I started posting the Singles results, the Saffers were in total control taking 10 of the first 12 points on offer, finishing off the Internationals 17-5! Their 28-16 total was the biggest win ever. Fortunately, it didn’t have any effect on losing Captain Tom’s great sense of humour. He had us in tears summarizing the event and his players’ performances.  A fantastic weekend by all … thank you to all the participants!  You are all winners … from singing your anthems at Friday night’s opening, to accepting your medals (kindly sponsored each year by member Colin Higgins) on Sunday.

Alison Bosch, Chris Lessing, Dave Hart and Norman (the) Rock won all their matches on the weekend. Well done to them and all 44 who participated in this year’s Links Cup!

Golfing Highlights

Another well-supported Selective Lighting/The Fireworks Golf Day as once again the hosts, Ernest and Linda Muller, brought in the winners. This time it was Ronnie and Sally Nienaber who came first on 22 c/i over Debbie McCracken and Madelaine Barry.

A proper way to order Halfway

I watched the PGA Tour last week where the CJ Cup was played at the highly touted Shadow Creek, originally built by mega-casino mogul, Steve Wynn. The course looks like it sits in the rolling hills of Michigan rather than the desert near Las Vegas. It must have been the most expensive course to build and it came with quality, ranked in the top-100 from inception. During the coverage they flashed a pic of Justin Rose admiring their 9th hole phone used to call in halfway order in advance. I guess when you pay $750 to play, you should get the real deal! See below. When you come to St Francis Links, you also call in the from the the London box, just a smaller version, and it costs a little less to play!
