Our Members Raved!
Behind the scenes, Kevin and Janet McNaughton, Ronnie and Sally Nienaber spent hours putting together a good night of trivia questions, slides to accompany them and a proper game plan to get through 10 categories with 10 unique questions in each round. They threw in bonus rounds called “Brainiac”, added a puzzle and a grid full of actors and stars when they were young.
The Trivia Night filled the deck with members and friends, most of whom came for the fun more than the challenge, enjoyed a meal, a few drinks and plenty of laughter!
The hosts didn’t follow the typical trivia night routine by downloading questions online. No, Ronnie watched more than 1000 hours of Jeopardy, Who wants to be a Millionaire and Family Feud for inspiration. Kevin mastered the art of video and the ladies managed the process during the night.
They have already been asked to take the Trivia Night on the road! I’m sure we’ll be doing that again soon!
PS – The prizes were amazing!
Standard Bank painted this place BLUE!
Standard Bank hosted the Women’s Professionals and their clients for two great days of golf and fun. It was the first time for us as the hosts of this type of event and we were proud to do it! The lady golfers could play; some could really play. Our members, Pandy Katakuzinos, Deandre Dreyer, and Ralph Banks teamed up with Professional Lindi Coetzer, to claim the team prize on 85 points.
The event was immaculately presented from the Club to the course – 1st class! I look forward to doing that one again.
The Links CUP (medals sponsored by Colin Higgins)
This year The Links Cup teams were captained ably by the Van Rensburg brothers, commonly known as Chris and Chris’ brother (Nic). 36 members teed off on the first tee on Saturday, playing Betterball and then, and then Foursomes. Singles followed on Sunday with 18 matches on the course. It all came down to the last fourball and the Internationals held on for a legendary victory over the South Africans. Captain Nic got the ultimate prize as the leader of the winning team. He received a place in the Vodacom Pro-Am.
As you can see from the picture, it was fun for all!

Korb wins Vodacom Origins in St Francis
The Players were smoked by everything from the course to the staff; the media had a heyday with their images, the sponsors raved about the venue and the support and the Sunshine Tour had the best venue of the year!
They can’t wait for the PGA Championship!

Golf can be a terribly cruel game at times and while leader Ockie Strydom was busy racking up a quadruple-bogey eight at the par-four 11th hole, Ruan Korb was putting the finishing touches to his brilliant round of 63 by sinking yet another birdie putt on the final hole to win the Vodacom Origins of Golf St Francis Links tournament on Saturday.
Korb’s third successive birdie, to go with two-in-a-row on the 12th and 13thholes, saw him shoot an astonishing nine-under-par in the final round, leaving him on 13-under-par for the tournament.
Strydom had been on 15-under before the awful shock of his eight on the 11th, and thereafter he could only par his way through to the close, settling for a level-par 72 after being four-under at the turn. That left the 37-year-old in second place on 11-under, two behind Korb.
Veteran Doug McGuigan also challenged for the title, but bogeyed the last two holes when pushing for birdies to tie Korb, with the 52-year-old closing with a 71 that left him on nine-under and in third place for the tournament.
The 28-year-old Korb admitted that it was just one of those idyllic days when every putt he looked at, he seemed to sink.
“I really enjoyed myself out there today, the weather was better and my putting was definitely the main reason for my win, every putt just seemed to find the bottom of the cup,” Korb said.
“My putting was certainly much better than when I finished second in the SunBet Challenge Time Square in August.”
The Silver Lakes golfer, who had begun the final round seven shots off the pace, had picked up decent momentum on the front nine with three birdies and a bogey in his first four holes, but he really began pushing for the title with a brilliant run that saw him eagle the par-five sixth and then picks up shots at the next two holes.
He was now 10-under for the tournament and in striking distance, but his charge was reversed as he had a 15-minute delay at the ninth tee while the group in front searched for balls. Korb lost concentration and bogeyed both nine and 10.
“I said before the round that if I could get to 14-under then I would have a chance, but waiting on the ninth was a bit of a momentum-breaker,” Korb said.
“But after those two bogeys, I just tried to get calm and said to my caddie that we have to do something now otherwise the win is going to get away from us.”
Knowing he had to be positive, Korb birdied both the par-four 12th and the par-five 13th into the westerly wind, and then, with holes 16 and 17 heading in the opposite direction, he took advantage with two more birdies.
The three on the par-four 18th was the icing on the cake for his second Sunshine Tour victory, his first coming at the Time Square Casino Challenge at Wingate Park Country Club in 2020.
“It’s a big confidence-booster to win at this time of year, with the big summer events coming up,” Korb said.

How about a Proper Road Trip (with Tony and Rose Gunton)
Hi St Francis Links Members
I have been involved in International Golf Travel for the past 23 years, and prior to the Covid 19 Pandemic was very active in promoting tours to different parts of the world. I accompanied many of these trips, and during the course of my travels, I was fortunate enough to spend time in the amazing country of Vietnam. The history of North and South Vietnam, and the wars that ensued, have always held a fascination for me, and to eventually visit and tour the country was an amazing experience. The warmth of the people, the country’s emergence after the dark years of war, to the current-day tourist destination that it has become, make it a must-see for the adventurous spirit of oneself.
As a golf tour, it is a premier destination, enjoying many world-class golf courses in the company of beautiful and charming caddies makes it an unforgettable experience!
I have put together a package which looks after the interests of the non-golfer, so if your partner is not a golfer they will still have an amazing touring experience.
I have allowed for 12 nights on the ground in Vietnam, travelling from North to South, including 7 rounds of golf. We will be staying in quality hotels and will be looked after at all times by expert local ground handlers.
Please have a look at the attached itinerary and register your interest by emailing me asap. The land price is quoted in US Dollars, whilst I have negotiated a Group airfare with Qatar Airways quoted in ZAR.
Join me for an unforgettable experience and let’s make this the first of many St Francis Links Tours into other interesting parts of the world.
