The Ladies
Good Luck to our ladies who will be traveling to Wedgewood to take on their final fixtures and potentially win the league!

The initial date for this fixture was the 7th of April, but with Wedgewood’s maintenance schedule, they have decided to postpone it to the 5th of May.

Our St Francis Ladies Links League team for the Wedgewood fixture (Final) is:
Lynn Slogrove (League Captain)
Sue Cogswell (Ladies Golf Captain)
Leigh Kooiker
Elmarie Maarschalk
Lynda Mynhardt
Bimpie Olivier

We currently lead the league and need one more strong showing to take the trophy home! Keep up that consistency!

Practice Session
Wow – what a line-up! The ladies last practice is on  Monday at 12:30pm. These sessions have been proving exceptionally fruitful and have put them in a great position to close out the campaign. Let’s go, team!

Golfing in the Cold and Rainy Months
A Light-hearted Guide for the ladies and gentlemen
Ah, winter golf! It’s the time of year when your breath fogs up faster than your golf ball can roll. While many might hang up their clubs until spring, true golf enthusiasts know that with a little adjustment and a sprinkle of humour, you can still enjoy the game even when it’s colder than a polar bear’s toenails!
Embrace the elements
First things first: dress for success! Layering is key. Think of yourself as a walking onion (Give credit to Shrek for this line) with lots of layers to keep you warm! Start with moisture-wicking base layers to keep sweat away from your skin).

Add an insulating layer like a fleece or sweater, and finish with a waterproof jacket. Don’t forget about your extremities; gloves and thermal socks are essential.

Caryn and Poppy in the Golf Shop are our local fashion experts, so pop by the shop. They will point you to the perfect ensemble that balances form and functionality.

Adjust your grip
Speaking of grip, let’s talk about how the cold affects your game. When temperatures drop, so does your grip strength. Consider using oversized grips or gloves designed for wet conditions to maintain control over your club. Our Club Professionals, Nazeem Goeda and Carel Tromp, will be able to assist you with the perfect glove and grip to suit your swing and game!

We have some ideal items in stock at the golf shop and they will have you winging it like a warm summer breeze in the cold conditions.

Club selection: The Winter Edition
Now, onto club selection! In colder weather, the ball doesn’t travel as far due to denser air and colder temperatures. This means you might need to club up, yes, that means hitting with more power than usual! If you typically use a 7-iron for 150 meters in summer, consider reaching for that trusty 6-iron instead.

Just think of it as giving yourself an extra challenge. Who doesn’t love a good plot twist?

Perfect your swing technique
Focus on making smooth swings rather than powerful ones; this will help maintain balance and control in slippery conditions. Plus, if you happen to take an unintentional slide into a bunker? Just call it “creative course management”!
Mental game: Keep it light
Let’s not forget about the mental aspect of winter golfing. It’s easy to get frustrated when the weather isn’t cooperating or when you’re struggling. Instead of letting those negative thoughts creep in, try embracing the absurdity of playing golf in such conditions. Laugh at that mud stain on your pants, it’s just nature’s way of saying “you’re having fun!” And remember: every shot counts double when it’s cold outside!
Post-round Warm-up
After your round (or after you’ve decided it’s too cold), treat yourself to some hot chocolate (perhaps with a dash of rum if you are a mom or dad) and share stories about how you conquered the elements (or attempted to at least).
So there you have it!
With these tips in mind, grab those clubs and head out to St Francis Links this winter season! Who knows? You might just discover that playing golf in chilly weather can be as refreshing as a cool drink on a hot summer day.

MAKE TIME
Don’t SPOIL a good walk
Any golf course is a beautiful and welcoming place. The view from the 1st tee is often spectacular and offering promise.
For too many golfers, each tee shot offers promise, but often sets up a difficult or impossible 2nd. They’re robbed of an approach shot with real hope.

So, why tee off from there? If you’re playing for fun or practice, why start from any tee? Why not enjoy a walk down the fairway to 150 metres out and start from there? That’s 9-holes of practice with your mid irons.

Or you could practise your tee shots, pick up your ball, and then place it wherever you want to practise your approach from.

Or you could improve your performance with the longest club.

Remove the slice,
add consistency
If you’re struggling with consistently finding the hitting zone with your driver, or losing the ball right off the fairway (right-handers), then let us help. It will change how much you enjoy your golf.
