The Value of Starting Young in Golf
At St Francis Links, we recognise the immense value of introducing young players to golf through our Junior Clinics during December and January. These clinics are designed not only to teach the fundamentals of golf but also to instil a lifelong love for the game.

Starting young allows children to develop essential skills that will serve them throughout their golfing journey.

Importance of Learning Fundamentals
Fundamentals are crucial in any sport, and golf is no exception. For young golfers, mastering the basics can lead to improved performance and greater enjoyment of the game. Our clinics focus on two primary areas: pre-swing principles and in-swing principles.
Pre-Swing Principles – The Building blocks of any good swing
Grip

  • The only thing connecting you to the club!
  • The grip is the foundation of a good swing. We teach juniors how to hold the club correctly, emphasizing that a proper grip allows for better control and power.

Aim

  • If you aim nowhere – you going to hit it their every single time.
  • Our professionals guide participants on how to align their bodies and clubs towards their target effectively.

Setup

  • A solid setup involves positioning oneself correctly before executing a shot. This includes stance width, posture, and ball position—all critical components that influence the outcome of each shot.
  • By focusing on these pre-swing principles, young golfers can build confidence as they learn how to prepare for each shot properly.
In-Swing Principles: Dynamic Balance and Lever System
Dynamic Balance

  • Maintaining balance throughout the swing is essential for consistency and power.
  • We emphasise exercises that help juniors develop stability during their swings, ensuring they can execute shots without losing control.

Lever System

  • Understanding how to use their body as a lever is key for generating clubhead speed and distance.
  • Our clinics teach juniors about the mechanics of their swings, helping them realise how different parts of their bodies work together during a shot.

These in-swing principles are integral in helping young golfers understand how to execute various shots effectively.

Basics Around Different Shots in Golf
Our Junior Clinics cover various types of shots that every golfer should know:
The Punch Shot

  • This low trajectory shot is useful in windy conditions (A very regular occurrence around these parts) or when navigating obstacles like trees. We teach juniors how to execute this shot by adjusting their stance, swing path and angle of attack.

The Chip Shot

  • Chipping is essential around the greens for getting close to the hole from short distances. Participants learn techniques for controlling distance and direction with this type of shot.

The Pitch Shot

  • A pitch shot requires more loft than a chip shot and is used when players need to carry the ball over an obstacle onto the green. Our clinics focus on using proper technique to achieve height and spin on pitch shots.

Putting

  • Putting is often considered one of the most critical aspects of golf since it accounts for a significant portion of strokes taken during a round. We emphasize grip, alignment, stroke mechanics, and reading greens so that juniors can become proficient putters.

Full Swing

  • Finally, we cover full swing mechanics—combining all learned elements into one fluid motion aimed at maximising distance while maintaining accuracy.

By teaching these various shots within our clinics, we equip young golfers with a comprehensive skill set that will enhance their overall game.

We hope to see your kids join us for these fun afternoons!

RECOVERY IS
UNDERRATED
Previously we asked you to track how many times your tee shots find the fairway. We want you to play more 2nd shots from the short grass.
Having found the fairway, even the best miss greens. What the best do, is make sure they minimise the impact of the miss and have the short game to make regular saves.
From any position off the green, inside 50 metres, how many shots are you likely to take? Keep an average per round.
Quick Suggestions:

1. Plan your approach shots so that you don’t miss on the short side. Try to ensure that if you miss, it’s an easier short-game save.
2. Be careful with how much risk you’re taking when trying to make a save. Don’t turn a worst-case bogey into a double.

Questions for you:

1. Are you aware of the difference in setup between a full approach shot, a short-pitch and chip shot?
2. Are you able to control the low point of your swing with the short-pitch shot? Do you have any practice drills to improve that?
3. Are you playing with a hit and miss approach from greenside bunkers? Have you ever had a lesson and learned the correct technique?

Forged benefits
for everyone
A Srixon, one-of-a-kind breakthrough in forging, allows you a sensationally responsive feel, whether you’re playing a game improvement or a player’s iron.

The steel used in the new ZXi Irons is softer but strong and durable because of that innovation. It is also lighter. And that allows all sorts of additional benefits to be added to your ball striking experience.

Srixon ZXi4
The most forgiving model in the new ZXi Iron range. Strike the ball across the face and you’ll likely notice consistent feel and direction.
You’ll also notice an easier and higher launch. A new double bore in the hosel allows weight be placed lower in the clubhead.
Srixon ZXi5
A combination of playability and workability is delivered by the next generation of Srixon’s MainFrame. Forgiveness on off-centre contact with amplified ball speed.
These cavity back irons will give our regular and good players enhanced distance, forgiveness, and workability. Everything in a single iron.

Srixon ZXi7
A thin topline, narrow sole, short blade, and minimal offset in a muscle-back iron. A very responsive iron with maximum workability puts you in control of the ball.

A high-density tungsten weight in the toe section of each long and mid-iron gives some assistance. It helps with ball speed and spin on off-centre strikes.
