One of our best lady golfers at St Francis Links, Lynn Slogrove, played in the SA Senior Women’s Championships at East London (West Bank and East London golf courses).
She shot an 84 gross at West Bank GC and 89 at East London GC.
Her 173 was the 9th best gross in the A Division and 10th place overall out of 170 players! Wow!
To crown this great performance, she received a prize for the best Stableford score of 34 in the 70+ years category at West Bank on Day 1. |

The only piece of golf equipment you use every time! |
|
We hope you are enjoying the cold winter weather and enjoying as much of the course as possible.
Today we want to talk to you about one of the most important pieces of equipment in your golf bag: the golf ball.
Golf balls may seem simple, but they have a big impact on your game. The type of golf ball you choose can affect your distance, spin, and overall performance on the course.
This is why it is important to find the right ball for your game. |
|
When it comes to choosing golf balls, there are a few key points to consider.
First, think about your skill level and swing speed.
If you are a beginner or have a slower swing speed, you may want to choose a softer ball to help you travel more distance. On the other hand, if you are a more experienced player with a faster swing speed, a stiffer ball may be a better choice for you.
Another important factor to consider is the compression of the golf ball.
Compression is related to how the ball is wound and can affect the feel and performance of the ball. Low-compression balls are softer and can help players with slower swing speeds gain more distance, while high-compression balls are firmer and can give players more control.
Finally, don’t forget to consider golf ball coverage.
Most golf balls have a urethane or ionomer coating. Urethane covers are softer and provide more spin and control, while ionomer covers are more durable and can improve distance and durability. |
|
Remember, the right ball can make a big difference in your performance on the field, so take the time to find the right ball for you. Have fun playing golf! |
With a very busy golfing calendar for EP, they are unfortunately not able to find a date that would suit all the players to complete the Matchplay leg of it. So, the only option taken is as follows:
All quarter final opponents must contact each other and establish what date would suit them, then contact Philip Horowitz – the golf director for Eastern Province – with that date so that he can ensure all arrangements are in place.
This can be done on any day except for this Saturday 8th June.
But please note that the quarter final match must be completed before the 23rd of June. Once this match is completed, please send the result to Philip.
Good luck to all participants and we look forward to seeing how this great event plays out. |
Please see below calendars for events and competition formats – with the persistent rains received, we have needed to move a few competition days and events around.

A Glimpse into the 2024 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting: Insights from Old Mutual’s Hywell George |
Join us for an enlightening event with PW Harvey & Co-host Hywell George from Old Mutual who attended the 2024 Berkshire Hathaway Annual General Meeting (AGM) in May 2024. This is your chance to gain first-hand insights into the workings of one of the world’s most successful investment companies and its legendary leader, Warren Buffett.
The AGM, often dubbed the “Woodstock for Capitalists”, is more than just a meeting. It is an annual pilgrimage for investors worldwide, eager to gain some wisdom from Buffett’s insights on investing, the economic outlook and life.
The 2024 AGM was particularly noteworthy as it marked the first meeting since the passing of Charlie Munger, Buffet’s long-time friend and business partner.
Some key takeaways from this AGM include:
- Berkshire’s decision to sell 13% of its holding in Apple
- Concerns about Artificial Intelligence
Berkshire reported a per-share market value increase of 15.8% last year, despite challenges.
Don’t miss this opportunity to listen, learn and be inspired by the experience of a Berkshire Hathaway AGM with Old Mutual and PW Harvey & Co. |

Saving you money this winter |
|
It’s just not that simple |
|
We often read that this time of the year, when the clubs are put away, is the time to get them checked and possibly have “lie angles adjusted to create a better fit”. |
Most of you probably know that lie angles have something to do with accuracy as shown above. In reality, there’s also a likely loss of contact efficiency, and you have the frustration of a shot that will not only be off target, but also come up short. |
So yes, some one can get you on a lie board or even use a launch monitor, but would you adjust your lie angles to fit a poor posture or setup? Wouldn’t you first want to make sure you had a good setup and posture, addressing the ball at the correct distance?
However experienced you are, get your posture and setup checked regularly because many swing faults start with poor setup and posture. |

The best return on your investment |
If there’s anything you want to do to prepare for a better golf year, it’s to get the fundamentals right BEFORE you start investing in equipment solutions. You can wait until spring and then come through or come along now. |
