The “Invitational”, the Calamari Classic, The Ryder Cup, The Links Cup and then The EP Champs and National Order of Merit
Covid has forced us to move some events scheduled for earlier in the year; the Links Cup played in conjunction with the Ryder Cup will sadly be played the same weekend as the annual Calamari but both will be fantastic events.
This weekend, we play our annual Men’s Invitational (Member-Guest) with more than 110 confirmed entries. Covid issues and the rescheduling of the event saw a decline in the record-setting number of entries we had for the July date. With fewer entries, we will return to one field each day and Sunday times played in the morning for our travelling golfers. Prizegiving lunch for the players will follow play on Sunday. Friday and Saturday nights will remain open.
Next week is the Ryder Cup, played this year at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. The PGA Championship was played there previously.
The Links Cup will be played in conjunction with the Ryder Cup this year. It will be our 13th edition pairing members with international decent against the forever Saffers. The fun actually kicks off on Thursday night with a special itinerary. We will catch up from 17h30 and introduce our newest members and residents on the estate. This event is FREE as a thank you to all of you, our members! Let’s fill the room
And it’s our pleasure to introduce a guest speaker
DEBORAH CURTIS- SETCHELL
She is the partner of the late, great South Africa Tennis No 1, Abe Segal. She was the first South African Woman to produce, present and conceptualize her own international televised sports series “A Cricket Player’s Kingdom”, followed by a “Rugby Player’s Kingdom” and “Legends at Leisure”. These appeared as prime time programming on Supersport DSTV in Africa and repeated across all channels and were used for DVD distribution in The Sunday Times, in the build-up to previous sports Majors.
Her Presentation!
INTRODUCTION: 2021 is a much-anticipated year for the 43rd Ryder Cup to be held at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, in September, also paying tribute to the much revered, golfing great and ex Ryder Cup Captain, Seve Ballesteros, who passed away from a brain tumour some years ago. This event has been classed as “Before Seve and After Seve”, in that, it only hit the global limelight and became a serious international competition, after the inclusion of a young Ballesteros, at the insistence of American legend, Jack Nicklaus.
Producer, the presenter, Deborah Curtis- Setchell, had the rare privilege of being the only South African journalist and indeed the only journalist to visit Ballesteros in the tiny village of Pedrena, where he was born and still then lived, on the Santander Peninsula in Northern Spain. She spent two days with him, during which he cycled up a nearby mountain, in preparation for the then-forthcoming Tour De France, introduced her to his family and gave her a guided tour of his beautiful and scenic seaside turf while reminiscing about golf, the Ryder Cup and other Majors, caddies, his rivals, his passions apart from golf and his philosophy on life….

ST FRANCIS BAY GOLF CLUB AWAITS ITS 24th CALAMARI CLASSIC
St Francis Bay Golf Club is getting ready for what is its premier event, the 24th Calamari Classic which will be held from the 23rd – 25th September this year.
The good news is that even during these difficult times we are able to host an event. Like in 2020 the event will focus on golf and due to Covid restrictions, there will be no formal evening functions. The tee times are fully booked already and we look forward to the golfers enjoying our great course over three days and exploring what St Francis Bay as a whole has to offer for them after golf. With no formal functions, the players will be able to explore what our town offers and try the many excellent restaurants in the evenings.
EP Champs and the National Nomads Junior Order of Merit will take place back to back in October. Starting with the Order of Merit, golfers from all over South Africa will play three days on SA’s 5th best! The event has been raised in status with international points earned for the first time. Originally scheduled for early July, this is now on with improved Covid regulations. Tuesday will be the new Wednesday on the 5th as the tournament runs from the 6th to the 8th. This is one to come and watch. our future stars will be leading the way! Reciprocal rates will be arranged at nearby Clubs.
The Ladies’ Invitational (Member/Guest) will be played on the 16 of October and we expect our best field ever. Who will get their names on the Champion’s Board this year?
