Sport, wine and weddings…oh, and The World Cup
This year’s Calamari Festival and Classics were bigger and better than ever-before with activities on the go throughout the Village and throughout the weekend. More than 20 wine estates were featured at The TOPS Calamari Wine Festival on opening day with hundreds in attendance. The next day, Calamari came to the fore by way of the Cook-Off with teams competing for the best recipe.
The Squash Club was full of energy as our local members welcomed players from Canada and South African clubs for a great couple of days of competitive sport and camaraderie!
The Calamari (Golf) Classic, in its 22nd year, was bigger and better than ever! Some 276 players completed play on Saturday, another 255 teed off on Sunday with another great turnout on Sunday. It’s St Francis Bay Golf Club’s premier event and we support them with sponsorship and a little of my time overseeing their auctions. The room was packed on Saturday night and, despite the tough weather, the room was heaving again on Sunday night. Judging from the faces of the organizers when we met on Tuesday for a follow-up, I could see it was all good.

Runners took to our roads for a well-attended parkrun before this year’s record turnout for the Nautical Half Marathon.

The Calamari Bowls Classic has now been growing from strength to strength for 20 years and this year was another winner. Madelaine Berry, our member who started the Bowls Classic years ago was very pleased with this year’s turnout. She stated that the weekend was actually “over-subscribed”
Smack in the middle of it all, we hosted a room full for the World Cup Rugby match between South Africa and New Zealand. We had the “GEES” but the Boks and the ref lost momentum in the second half.

ARC (Association of Residential Communities)
Andrew Barton, our FM, Liezl and I all attended and participated at the recent National ARC Convention held at San Lameer in KZN. Liezl led a panel discussion and Andrew and I sat on two others. The guest speakers, headed by John Loos, property analyst for FNB, were dynamic and informative. The exchange of ideas always assist us in keeping our estate moving forward – though, I think many who attended, envy many aspects of what we represent here at St Francis Links. I shared a story about how it all works in a successful company – “WE TALK TO EACH OTHER”.
