Larry Gould and Peggy Klement share their vows first!

gould Gould Wedding 3 Dec sm

27 years ago, Larry (Lawrence, Gouldie, The Frenchman, Frenchie) was the Marketing and Entertainment Manager at Fancourt. On September 1, 1991, he picked me and my familoy up at the airport in Cape Town and took us to our first-night-in-South Africa accommodation at the Mount Nelson. To say I was impressed was a slight understatement. I was arriving sight-unseen to Fancourt where I would take up the position of PGA Director of Golf. Lawraaaans, as he was known then, toured us through the city concluding a three adventure through london getting here. At about 11pm, he came looking for me, thinking maybe I had fallen asleep in the bathroom at the seafront restaurant, the Green Dolphin, where we were dining. Oh, Larry, you didn’t understand the Texan; I was showing the bartenders who to make a lemon drop.

At about that same time, Larry was courting an American girl who was also embracing South Africa with her hospitality skills as General Manager of the Halyards in Port Alfred before taking on the Breakwater Hotel (home of the Graduate School of Business, as well) in the Waterfront. Larry moved to Cape Town where he wrote Gould’s Guide to Golf, hosted numerous international touring groups and lectured on hospitality and tourism, by demand.

Over the year’s Larry would ask his life-partner for her hand and for 7 times she insisted on remaining his girlfriend. Finally, as the story goes, she opened a fortune cookie stating that number 8 would be her lucky sign.

After 26 years together, Larry and Peggy became our first  wedding couple of the holiday season. The small ceremony and long lunch here will be followed by a bigger gathering of close friends in Franschhoek later in the month! As the MC, I kept my words reletively short as Larry can talk – almost past the medium rare filet!

Over the next few days five other couples will share their vows and their love for each other here at St Francis Links along with luncheons, yearends and other special functions

Gillian and Linda claim their 1st Major!

Gillian Hammond and Linda Müller walked away from most of the competitors when they combined for 31 points in the final 9-hole format. Their 72 point total for the modified Betterball, Betterball and Combined Individual outdistanced Madelaine Barry and Sandy Cunningham, who also counted out former champions, Sharon Noble and Margot McGregor for 2nd. Both teams ended on 64 points. After golf, a special ladies’ luncheon followed. It’s al about the ladies!
