Beating the odds and her age!
Lynn Slogrove is not a new name to be highlighted in our newsletters.

This past Saturday Lynn shot an amazing 70!

Look at this for an impressive scorecard:

With 10 pars and 5 birdies she tied the previous ladies scoring record – held by ladies professional Bonita Bredenhann.

This is impressive for anyone but let us not overlook the fact that Lynn is 71 years young, and she beat her age by one shot!

After doing some research into the odds, it comes to an estimated 0.04% chance of accomplishing this feat!

To top this all – Lynn has been announced as the reserve player for the EP Inter-provincial Team scheduled to play in August at Irene Country Club

Great showing Lynn!

Links Ladies Golf Tour to Plett June 2024
24 St Francis Links Ladies trekked off to Plettenberg Bay in their Client Care shirts to play at Goose Valley & Plettenberg Bay Country Club. Many thanks to Dirk Groeneveld from Client Care.
Tilly the Tortie was our mascot and many thanks to Linda Clark who made us all Tilly the Tortie ball markers. Nats Scott was designated as the mascot bearer.
We stayed at the Whaling Station, which was able to house all 24 of us and each night we had great fun in the lapa with a huge fire. The fines committee of Cherise Milne, Sue Gray and Cornelia Alberts kept us all in stitches as the fines came thick and fast, no-one was left out.

The Newbie Tourers were asked (told) to provide the first night’s entertainment, which provided much laughter. They even showed us a new way to use our putters.

We played at Goose Valley on the first day and played a 4 Ball Alliance with the Goose Valley Ladies after which we were treated to a lovely curry lunch. As there were many higher handicaps amongst us, we decided to max the handicap at 36. Even so, the newnies did themselves proud and enjoyed playing on a different course.

Plett Country Club the next day proved harder for many of us as they greens were very hard and fast, but a great day was finished off with prizegiving and pizzas before heading off home.

Britta was crowned Queen of the Tour with a 77 at Goose and her team came 2nd at Plett
The Tour was the first where so many of the Links ladies joined in. Many had never been on tour before and it’s hoped that we trek off again in the not too distant future and who knows? There maybe 30 of us next time.

A vote of thanks goes to Dirk Groenveld for our lovely shirts and to Sue Gray for providing so many of the prizes. To Riekie for her prizes and Leigh and Sally for dinner on the first night.

What was so wonderful was to be part of a group of 24 ladies who all got on so well, all joined in the fun and laughter and we came away with 23 new friends.

The perfect winter warmer!
From our Maestros in the Kitchen
Soup is regarded as comforting; it warms you and its versatile. Even better than this, it’s quick to prepare and you can create an array of unique soups with left over ingredients.

So this week, our Chefs want to share with you their ultimate winter warmer soup recipe to provide a little extra comfort during those chilly evenings.

CREAMY BROCCOLI & BLUE CHEESE SOUP

What do you need?
100g butter
100g cake flour
1.5L milk
2 x heads Broccoli florets (blanched/boiled and roughly topped) keep 4 florets aside for plating
1/2 cup of cheddar
Blue cheese, crumbled
Salt and black pepper

How to prepare it?

  1. In a saucepan, over low heat, melt your butter with a whisk. Once melted sprinkle the cake flour over the butter and mix through. This is called a ROUX: Equal parts on melted butter and flour…this will be the thickening agent.
  2. Still on a low heat add your milk bit by bit. As it thickens, you add more. Continue to cook it over low heat.
  3. Add the chopped broccoli, season with salt and pepper.
  4. Remove from the heat. At this stage you can either blend the soup or keep it lumpy. After it has been blended, pour back into the pot. Add the grated cheese and crumbled blue cheese. Pan-fry the broccoli and add it on top of the soup for extra crunch
  5. Sit back, relax and have a glass of wine while you wait to dish up!

The Sunshine Tour is Shining Bright
Last Monday, Liezl and I attended a special day hosted by Tour Commissioner Thomas Abt and the Sunshine Tour at Royal Johannesburg. The day was planned to honour the courses who hosted tour events and partners who sponsored the events, as well.

They also presented a timeline reflecting their growth since they launched the “Greatness Begins Here”  campaign!

The impressive video sums up the Sunshine Tour’s achievement these past five years, offering more tournaments and more money at more levels with ladies’ golf included.
In addition to the updates, the Tour announced a new programme called the Ambassadors’ Club. Marketing Manager, Mcebisi Mtshali, is a dynamo and definitely an asset to the tour management. The ambassadors are all legends in their time representing different sporting cultures

We were also treated to guest speaker Sibusiso Vilane sharing his passions and adventures. Google this awesome man who has completed all seven summits:
Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa) 1999
Mount Everest (Asia) 2003 – South and 2005 – North
Aconcagua (South America) 2006
Mount Elbrus (Europe) 2006
Carstensz Pyramid (Oceania) 2006
Vinson Massif (Antarctica) 2006
Mount McKinley (North America) 2008
and was the first African to scale Everest!

What a wonderful and humble man!

St Francis Links is proud to be associated with the Tour and its partners, such as Fitch & Leedes. There is no doubt that the good media coverage and accolades we have received have greatly contributed to our reputation in the industry and our rankings in the country.

With the PGA Championship scheduled to return in November, the media coverage will again be a bonus for St Francis Links. We will be closed from Sunday 18 November 2024 with the tournament being played from 21 to 24 November 2024.

Someone, with an evil smile, said that “golf is a search for perfection, but a game of misses”.

The evil smile exists because they know that most of us are too often seduced by that search for perfection, when we should be planning for imperfection.

One number below is more important than any other if you’re standing in the fairway planning your approach.

When you’ve hit a great tee shot, your best on a particular par 4, and you’re looking at the second into the green above, what club are you playing, to what area of that green, and what is your ‘cover number’? Learn more.

I think it was Jack Nicklaus who said he could help any amateur save 5 (it might have been 10) shots just by changing their thinking.

How many shots can we save you?
Why not challenge us? Come and book a playing lesson and we’ll provide swing advice and technique improvement. But we’ll also provide you insights that will reduce your frustrations with the game and allow you to shoot lower scores.

The transfer of power
Srixon ZX MkII Drivers
What if you could design a driver head with ‘two springs’? One that added over 2kph of ball speed (vs. the previous generation of hyper-fast faces).

That’s what you get with the Rebound Frame inside the Srixon ZX MkII Drivers. A ‘spring within a spring’.

The result of two flex zones snapping back into shape isn’t just faster ball speed. It’s also an increase in the size of the area on the face that gives you maximum speed.
Maximum POWER
The transfer of power at impact, converting your swing speed to more ball speed, takes you further off the tee. Now add a session where we ensure the launch conditions maximise the distance that extra ball speed gives you, and we could be looking at an extra 15, 20, 25 and more metres.
