Unquestionably one of the best quiz nights we have ever had! |
The quiz night organised by The McNaughtons and The Nienabers was a remarkable event that brought together community members for an evening of fun, knowledge, and camaraderie. Meticulous planning always goes into this event! They collaborated to create a comprehensive quiz that would cater to a diverse audience. This included selecting various categories such as general knowledge, history, sports, and pop culture to ensure that all participants could engage with the questions.
The atmosphere was lively as teams formed and strategised on how best to tackle the questions ahead.
The quiz itself was structured into rounds with varying difficulty levels. This format kept participants engaged throughout the evening. A charismatic quizmaster in Kevin McNaughton led the event, ensuring that everyone understood the rules and maintained a spirited competition.
One of the standout features of this quiz night was its ability to foster community spirit, not only within the Links but also by bringing locals to our estate to join in the fun! Participants ranged from families to friends and neighbours who came together not only for competition but also for social interaction.
Additionally, local businesses contributed prizes for winners over the value of R20,000, further enhancing community involvement and support for local enterprises.
Be sure to keep a lookout for similar events in the future!

What a transformation to our entrance! |
The entryway of St Francis Links has recently undergone a significant transformation with the installation of a new landscaping centrepiece at our beautiful estate’s main entrance. This enhancement not only beautifies the entrance but also reflects the commitment to maintaining an inviting and aesthetically pleasing environment for residents and visitors alike.
The design was carefully curated to harmonise with the natural surroundings of St Francis Links. It features a combination of indigenous plants that provide vibrant colours throughout the year. The use of local flora not only supports biodiversity but also ensures that the landscaping is sustainable and requires less maintenance. |
Our Grounds Manager – Christiaan Schoeman |
Chris was instrumental in the meticulous planning and execution of this project, carried out by his skilled team, who are experienced in creating functional yet beautiful outdoor spaces.
The project began with site preparation, including soil testing to ensure optimal growing conditions for the selected plants. Planting was then conducted in phases to allow for proper acclimatisation of each species. |

Over the next few weeks, we will be highlighting a few things you might not have known about the PGA Championship.
It forms part of the “Triple Crown” of South African golf.
This championship is considered one of the most known events on the Sunshine Tour and is part of what is known as the “Triple Crown” of South African golf, alongside the South African Open and the South African Masters.
This highlights the rich history of the tournament. The tournament has seen many distinguished winners throughout its history. Winning all three titles (PGA Championship, South African Open, and South African Masters) within a single season is an exceptional achievement that only a few golfers have done such as Bobby Locke, Gary Player and Ernie Els. |
Don’t miss this prestigious event! We invite all male members to participate in a tradition that spans decades! Entries are open, please click on the link below |
New additions to the Golf Shop! |
|
Grant Winter is an award-winning golf writer who has covered tournaments in South Africa, Britain, Europe, and America. Based at The Star in Johannesburg, he was the Group Golf Writer for South Africa’s Independent Group of newspapers for 30 years.
We are excited to stock Grant’s book, Prince of Putters, about Bobby Locke in the Golf Shop. It’s a great Christmas gift! |
Portly, eccentric, and beer-loving, Bobby Locke strode the world’s fairways in the 1940s and 1950s in immaculate attire, including plus-fours, white buckskin shoes, a white cap, and linen dress shirts with neckties. A superstar golfer, he won over 100 tournaments globally. Using an ancient putter with a rusted head and a hickory wood shaft, Locke was seen as a magician on the greens, capable of holing putts from any distance and angle. In 1947, he won seven times in four months on his first visit to America, competing against (and often beating) US greats like Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, and Byron Nelson. Later banned, then unbanned in America, he went on to win four Open Championships in Britain between 1949 and 1957 before a 1960 car crash ended his world-stage career.

IT’S FIVE O’CLOCK SOMEWHERE! |
It’s time to get your cocktail shaker out, or simply take a fancy glass, fill it with ice, and slowly build your refreshing summer cocktail – vibrant, full of flavour, and screaming “MORE”!
A Daiquiri is a refreshing summer cocktail that’s easy to prepare.
You need:
- 50 ml (or two tots) White Rum (Bacardi)
- Lime
- Simple syrup
- Fruit of choice (your pick)
Let’s START…
- Take a blender and fill it with 2 tots of rum, some freshly squeezed lime (keep the zest for decoration).
- Add 25 ml of simple syrup (made by boiling equal parts sugar and water).
- Add any fruit… blueberries, mango, melon, strawberries, or any soft fruit.
- Blend until smooth.
- Serve in a fancy glass and garnish it. Always remember to garnish your Daiquiri with the fruit used in the blender.
ENJOY! If you prefer non-alcoholic, make a Virgin Daiquiri/Mocktail by leaving out the alcohol and adding a bit more syrup. |

Most of us think a golf course is a beautiful and welcoming place. |
But for most inexperienced golfers, the view from the 1st tee (or probably any tee box) fills them with trepidation. It’s intimidating. It doesn’t promise a great experience. And it rarely is. |
So, why tee off from there? |
If you’re playing Sunday afternoon, or late one evening, with a partner who has never really got going with the game, why start from any tee? Why not enjoy a walk down the fairway to 50 metres out and start from there? Why not 30 metres? Why not 100 metres? It’s your round, it’s your time. It’s your enjoyment. It’s even your practice. |
Make time to make golf fun. Introduce people to an experience they’ll enjoy, and they’ll then persist with the game. And, in time, the view from the 1st tee will become a beautiful start to a great game of golf. |
