next up on the golfing calendar is the Ladies Invitational. This event has been rescheduled more than once (sorry, M) and now we are ready to roll! As usual, each of our lady members may bring up to three guests to share the spcial day. Following play, Chef Brad will present a fine lunch and share a new recipe with the participants (as I looked for a pic of Brad, I soon relaized that none would do justice to his new physique!).

Can you say BIG wedding!
Look what a new roof can do – make a winter wedding very special! It also allowed for 220 guests to sit comfortably as the ceremony was held indoors. For me, an African wedding can simply be amazing – the love for one another is often expressed in song – this wedding was certainly full of beautiful song and full of love!

Ace in the Hole!
John Wilson aces the 7th for his fifth Hole in One! Charles Laird and Barry Phillips are hoping the magic will rub off on them! John used a 6-iron from 140m to a pin on the right hand side of the green – Yep, they watched it curve from the left and into the hole! |

Interclub produces better results
Our members and friends from St Francis Bay GC have been participating in the Inrterclub series of events that features the Clubs listed below. It involves a good bit of travel (thus the slow take-up in the beginning). Now the value of the event has been appreciated and more interest has resulted. Those who have participated get the first go for the next event (30 August – Oubaai), but if the team of 12 is not filled, get you names in the hat!

FAREWELL TO NIGEL IDRIS Long-time member and supporter of all Club activities, Nigel Idris, passed away after a short battle with cancer. They don’t make ‘em better than Nigel. He possessed one of the best swings in the Club and one of the best attitudes, as well. Nigel, always pleasant on and off the course, was known for his coffee after the game – fortunately for the bar sales, his playing partners seldom followed suit! Liezl and I will miss the Wake next Friday (August 7 at 4h30) to honor of his life, but extend our best wishes to Gill and the family and his so many friends. There are many fourballs upstairs waiting for him to join in! Pearly Gates Country Club has another new member! |

Flopping your way around
Often there is an obstacle between you and the green. Here at St Francis Links you need to use a variety of different shots around the green and the ability to hit the ball high and a short distance will help you to reduce your strokes around this course.
Tips to hitting a high flop shot:
• Adopt a slightly wider stance and position your hands over the ball.
• Open your clubface and your stance.
• Swing path is parallel to your foot line.
• Slide the clubhead under the ball
• Let your body unwind through the shot and finish high
• Keep your rhythm nice and smooth
Hitting a flop shot is all about practice and confidence. Without practice you won’t have the confidence that is necessary to execute the shot.

Spring Programme
When love and hate collide
I know the heading of my article sounds like a song, and maybe it was written for Course Superintendents as they start their Spring treatments on the course every year, the time of the year when course superintendent punch holes in their well-manicured greens that resembles billiard tables, also the time of the year when members “love to hate” the poor guy maintaining the greens, the Course “Sup”. Why would any person in their right mind want to mess up a perfect green?
I hope to answer some of these questions from a Superintendent’s point of view.
Why do we hollowtine?
It is hard to believe that hollowtining helps you keep your greens perfect, but this is true. The main reasons why we do hollowtining will be named and highlighted in this article.
